Former Australian captain Steve Waugh said he was "deeply troubled" by the ball-tampering saga that unfolded in the Newlands Test. Waugh also added that the incident was a breach of the 'Spirit of Australian Cricket' undertaking that was drawn up and adopted by the players during his time as the captain.

After the third day's play in the Cape Town Test, Cameron Bancroft had confessed that he had used yellow sticky tape to pick up granules from the pitch and rub them on the ball in an effort to alter its condition. On the other hand, Australian captain Steve Smith confessed that the "leadership group", which included himself, knew about the ploy. The following day Smith and his deputy, David Warner, were stood down from their posts for the rest of the third Test match against South Africa, in the wake of the former's confession to premeditated ball-tampering.
