Kumar Sangakkara was unbeaten on 18 and Kaushal Silva was on 21 as Sri Lanka ended Day 1 of the second Test at 70/1 after bowling out Pakistan for 138. Young off-spinner Tharindu Kaushal grabbed five wickets while seamer Dhammika Prasad also chipped in with three wickets as the tourists collapsed in 42.5 overs by tea after skipper Misbah-ul Haq elected to bat on a fresh, bouncy pitch at the P. Sara Oval. Kaushal, a 22-year-old playing only his second Test match, finished with five for 42 runs in 10.5 overs of accurate spin bowling in helpful conditions. Mohammad Hafeez top-scored with 42 as Pakistan lost eight wickets in the afternoon session after resuming at the lunch score of 70 for two.

There was some cheer for Pakistan as they got their review back after yesterday's mistake by the third umpire, Paul Reiffel. Zulfiqar Babar got one to dart into the right-handed Kaushal Silva and the close-in fielders instantly went up in appeal after Younis Khan completed a catch. The umpire deemed it not out and slow motion replays indicated that there was no bat on that. However, replays also indicated that the ball would have gone on to hit the stumps and the batsman should have been adjudged LBW but the third umpire did not check for that, which he was supposed to.

Already on the back foot after being bowled out for 138 in the first innings of the second Test, Pakistan have suffered another big blow as their pace spearhead Wahab Riaz won't play further part in the ongoing Test. Riaz, has fractured his left hand, which is his bowling hand, and is ruled out of action for at least three weeks, according to reports.

Kaushal was rewarded for his patience as he went past fifty in style, with a boundary off Junaid Khan in the 58th over. This was his eighth fifty in Test cricket and his fifth against Pakistan. In the following over, Kaushal scored a four off Babar to help Sri Lanka into the lead.

Kumar Sangakkara and Kaushal Silva batted in a steady manner as they brought down the deficit with a good partnership. Sanga and Kaushal entered the 30s and raised the half-century stand in the 43rd over when Kaushal took a single off Hafeez in the 43rd over.

In the 44th over, Hafeez fired a direct hit at the striker's end but Sangakkara comfortably made it to the crease despite a confusion with Kaushal. However, Sanga had to depart in the same over after Asad Shafiq took a fine catch at long-on. Looking to hit Babar over the boundary, Sanga could not get the distance and Shafiq took a catch tumbling backwards to send back the left-hander for 34.

While Kaushal and Lahiru Thirimanne put on a steady partnership to help Sri Lanka forward, the latter had a lucky break in the 52nd over when he was put down by Azhar Ali at forward short-leg. Looking to play the ball to the on-side with soft hands, the left-hander hit the ball straight to Ali, who was late to respond, denying Babar a wicket.

Thirimanne could not capitalise on Azhar's miss as the left-hander fell to Yasir Shah in the 55th over. Looking to defend, Thirimanne got an inside edge and the ball lobbed off the pad to forward short leg, where Azhar took the catch on the second attempt. Thirimanne departed on 7, leaving Sri Lanka at 119/3.
